Microsoft Word for Mac will get two new shortcuts

Average rating: 0

There is nothing surprising that Microsoft Office apps for MacOS and iOS (from Apple) usually get fewer features and updates, compared to their versions for Windows. However, the wait is over since Microsoft has decided to bring some new shortcuts to Mac users. Officially, Microsoft Word for Mac will get two new shortcuts that are extremely helpful that everyone needs. To find out more, keep scrolling in the following post.

The increasing prevalence of remote work has made reading and consuming information on various devices and screen sizes common. The Word Product team has introduced new shortcuts to make it easier to zoom documents to the right level for personal screens, such as laptops, tablets, or mobile phones. While Word has been a product since 1983, the engineering team continues to work on new features and advanced technology, but it’s not always possible to revise pre-existing behavior.

Industry standards have diverged from Word’s initial implementation of keyboard shortcuts, which has frustrated users. The Word team has responded to user feedback and updated keyboard shortcuts to meet users’ expectations that Command-Plus (+) / Command-Minus (-) will zoom in and out. Word prioritizes accessibility and aims to make the zooming experience as seamless as possible. With the new keyboard shortcuts, users can enjoy a more accessible and user-friendly Word experience on personal screens.

In conclusion, the Word Product team recognizes the increasing use of personal screens for work and information consumption. To meet users’ expectations, the team has introduced new keyboard shortcuts to make it easier for users to zoom documents on personal screens. While the Word team works on new features and advanced technology, they prioritize accessibility and strive to make the user experience as seamless as possible. The updated keyboard shortcuts demonstrate the team’s responsiveness to user feedback and dedication to meet users’ expectations.

In the newest beta version of Microsoft Word for 365 Insiders (Version 16.67.1113.0 and later), we will be able to zoom in with new keyboard shortcuts. Therefore, it will be unnecessary to use on-screen buttons anymore. Even though it does not sound like a huge deal, practically, it would help us to save time. While working with text on Word, people mostly use keyboard shortcuts. Therefore, it would definitely be much more convenient to zoom in with the physical buttons rather than using the on-screen buttons. To zoom in, the keystroke is Command-Plus (+). Meanwhile, the keystroke Command-Minus (-) will zoom out. Each press will zoom in or out 10 percent. To reset, you may press Command-0. That will set the document back to 100 percent.

The other upgrade is also a small feature. However, it’s something we actually need and use every single time. Usually, when we copy a bit of text into a Word document, Word automatically keeps all of the formatting including font, size, and color. Then, we will have to use the “Clear Formatting” feature to set it back to default. It is a huge out-of-date feature since on Windows, it has been present for years. However, it is not until now that the tech giant decided to bring it the Mac version. You might now easily clear the text formatting by using a common keystroke Command-Shift-V. The company stated that “pasted content matches the neighboring text formatting, rather than preserving its original font size, color, etc.” Seemingly, it got notably much smarter.

Although the Command-Plus (+), Command-Minus (-), and Command-Shift-V shortcuts have been added to the Word beta version, they are not yet available in the official version. It is uncertain whether Microsoft will include these features in the official release. However, it is likely that they will be added in a later update this spring.

If you’re an Insider and wondering why you don’t have a particular feature yet, don’t worry – it’s not you, it’s us. Features are rolled out gradually to ensure everything runs smoothly. So, it’s possible that we are still working on it or testing it with a smaller group of users.

We want to make sure that features are working as expected and meet your needs before making them available to everyone. We may also remove certain features temporarily based on your feedback to further improve them. While it’s rare, we reserve the right to remove a feature entirely from the product, even if you’ve had the chance to try it out as an Insider.

If you’re a Mac user and you want to use Microsoft Word, you can get it as part of the Office for Mac package. This package is available with a Microsoft 365 subscription, which costs $69.99 per year or $6.99 per month. However, if you’re a student or you just plan to use it at home, you may want to go for the subscription-free Home & Student version, which costs $149.99.
